Revision Rhinoplasty

Introduction

Introduction to Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is designed for our clients who have undergone nose surgery but are seeking improvements in appearance, function, or both. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery reported that about 80% of its members reported that more than 10% of their rhinoplasty patients sought revision after a prior surgery.1

At The Block-Wheeler Clinic in San Francisco, CA, Dr. Nikolas Block-Wheeler focuses on providing personalized revision rhinoplasty solutions.

What is a Revision Rhinoplasty?

A revision rhinoplasty is a secondary or follow-up surgical procedure that Dr. Block-Wheeler performs to correct or improve the results of a client’s prior rhinoplasty. Unlike a primary rhinoplasty, revision surgery can be more complex because it involves working with altered tissue, scar formation, or structural changes from the initial surgery.

Techniques may include reshaping the nasal bones, refining the tip, adjusting the bridge, or reconstructing the cartilage to improve both form and function.

Who Are the Best Candidates for a Revision Rhinoplasty?

Ideal candidates for revision rhinoplasty are adults who have previously undergone nasal surgery and wish to improve the results or correct functional issues.

Some signs that a patient may benefit from revision rhinoplasty include:

  • Dissatisfaction with the shape, size, or symmetry of the nose after a previous surgery
  • Have nasal obstruction, difficulty breathing, or chronic congestion resulting from or not improved by your first procedure
  • Have visible bumps, depressions, or unevenness along the bridge or tip

During the consultation, Dr. Block-Wheeler evaluates the patient’s nasal structure, skin quality, and cartilage availability to determine the most effective surgical approach for each individual.

What Are the Benefits of a Revision Rhinoplasty?

Some of the main benefits Dr. Block-Wheeler’s clients see with their revision rhinoplasty include:

  • Corrected asymmetry, bumps, or irregularities from the first surgery
  • Refined nasal tip, bridge, or overall shape for a more balanced facial appearance
  • Improved nasal airflow and addressed functional breathing issues caused by the previous surgery
  • Restored confidence and satisfaction with facial aesthetics
  • A natural-looking result that aligns with the patient’s goals

What to Expect on the Day of Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery

Dr. Block-Wheeler will make incisions inside the nostrils and at the bottom of the nose to minimize visible scarring. Through these procedures, he will reshape your cartilage and bones to achieve the desired nasal contour and symmetry. Additional techniques may be used to correct structural issues, improve airflow, or restore the nasal tip.

Once the adjustments are complete, incisions are closed with sutures, and a nasal splint or dressing is applied to support the new structure during initial healing. Patients are monitored in the recovery area until anesthesia wears off and they are ready to return home.

Revision Rhinoplasty Recovery

Swelling, bruising, and some discomfort are normal after the first few days, but we usually advise our patients to rest with the head elevated and avoid strenuous activity. Most can return to their lighter daily activities within one to two weeks, while swelling continues to decrease over several months.

Your nasal splints and external sutures will be removed within a week, and sutures inside the nose dissolve on their own or are removed by Dr. Block-Wheeler.

Cold compresses, pain medication, and proper care of the incision sites during this time will help ensure a smooth recovery.
