Introduction

Introduction to Rhinoplasty

The shape of your nose is a large contributor to facial aesthetics. Even small changes in size, angle, or symmetry can make a big difference. A rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure we offer our clients to help reshape their nose and create balance and harmony in their face without compromising function.

At The Block-Wheeler Clinic in San Francisco, Dr. Nikolas Block-Wheeler approaches rhinoplasty with precision and care.

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty reshapes the internal and external structures of the nose to improve appearance, breathing, or both. The surgery can refine a nasal hump, narrow the bridge, reshape the tip, or correct asymmetry.

A rhinoplasty is one of plastic surgery’s most common procedures, with over 48,000 rhinoplasties being performed on both men and women in the United States.1

Who Are the Best Candidates for a Rhinoplasty?

Ideal candidates are men and women who are not satisfied with the current shape or function of their nose. Rhinoplasties remain popular among those aged 18 to 34, accounting for 60.1% of procedures globally last year.2 Common reasons patients visit The Block-Wheeler Clinic include:

  • A nasal hump or wide nasal bridge
  • A low nasal bridge
  • A drooping, bulbous, or upturned tip
  • Asymmetry caused by genetics or injury
  • Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils

It’s also important that patients have realistic expectations. During your consultation, Dr. Block-Wheeler takes time to understand your goals and explain what can be safely achieved given your unique anatomy.

What Are the Benefits of a Rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty refines the shape, size, and symmetry of the nose, helping it blend more harmoniously with the rest of your features. Many patients choose rhinoplasty to smooth a bump on the bridge, provide greater definition to the bridge, lift or define the nasal tip, narrow wide nostrils, or correct asymmetry.

Beyond the cosmetic improvements, it can also address breathing issues caused by structural problems inside the nose, such as a deviated septum.

What’s the First Step?

The first step is scheduling a consultation with Dr. Block-Wheeler at The Block-Wheeler Clinic in San Francisco. During your appointment, you will have the opportunity to discuss your concerns, ask questions, and share what you hope to achieve. Dr. Block-Wheeler will examine your nasal and facial anatomy, review your medical history, and explain what is possible based on your unique structure.

This meeting is also when you will work with Dr. Block-Wheeler to morph your images and settle on your ideal aesthetic. Once you and Dr. Block-Wheeler agree on a treatment plan, his team will guide you through pre-surgery preparation and what to expect at each stage of the process.

What to Expect on the Day of Rhinoplasty Surgery

After anesthesia is administered for comfort, Dr. Block-Wheeler will create small incisions either inside the nostrils (closed or endonasal rhinoplasty) or across the narrow strip of skin between them (open rhinoplasty). The choice of approach depends on the level of refinement needed and your specific anatomy.

Once access is gained, he will carefully reshape the nasal bones, cartilage, and soft tissues to create the desired contour. If necessary, he can also correct breathing issues by adjusting internal structures. After the adjustments are complete, the incisions are closed with fine sutures, and a small internal and external splint is placed to support your new nasal shape as it begins to heal.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

During the first week, you can expect swelling, congestion, and mild bruising around the eyes. These side effects improve significantly after the first seven to ten days, and your nasal splint will be removed around that time.

By the second week, you should feel comfortable returning to work or non-strenuous activities. Light swelling can persist for several weeks, but makeup and gentle skincare can easily conceal any minor discoloration.
