What is Ear Reconstruction?
Ear reconstruction is a surgical procedure that rebuilds the ear’s form and structure after trauma, congenital deformities, or cancer-related tissue loss. Depending on the individual’s needs, the procedure may involve reshaping existing cartilage, creating a new ear framework using the patient’s own tissue (often rib cartilage), or utilizing biocompatible implants.
For children born with microtia, or for adults who have experienced injury or skin cancer excision, ear reconstruction restores symmetry, proportion, and a sense of normalcy. In many cases, it can also help improve hearing when combined with reconstructive or otologic interventions.
