What is Lip Reconstruction?
Lip reconstruction is a specialized surgical procedure that rebuilds the structure and appearance of the lips following trauma, cancer excision (such as Mohs surgery), or congenital deformities, such as a cleft lip. Because the lips are essential for speech, facial animation, and oral competence, reconstruction requires both technical expertise and aesthetic sensitivity.
Depending on the defect’s size, depth, and location, Dr. Block-Wheeler may use local tissue flaps, grafts, or microsurgical transfers to restore the lip’s natural contour and mobility. The goal is to reestablish normal oral function (including articulation, eating, and expression) while recreating a smooth, balanced appearance that harmonizes with surrounding features.
